Abstract
In this lecture, we will analyze Japanese Buddhist thought and culture for the purpose of clearly describing the developments of East Asian philosophy from a new perspective. Specifically, we will attempt to examine the view on a human body developed by Tendai and Shingon Esoteric Buddhist monks from the ancient to medieval time periods.
As I have already pointed out in multiple previous works, Japanese Buddhist monks during the pre-modern period have frequently asserted a unique view on a human body that has the structural similarity to scientific anatomical knowledge while maintaining the comprehensive mandalic vision. In this lecture, we shall hypothetically refer to this view as the “body mandala.” First, we will attempt to reveal the whole image of this “body mandala” through examining various historical materials.
In addition, based on a series of discussions concerning the “body mandala,” we will examine the characteristics of East Asian philosophy and wisdom from a new perspective. In more detail, we will attempt to consider the validity of following ideological elements: the idea of “foundation” and monistic way of thinking frequently emphasized as the characteristic of Asian philosophy.
