[Internal use only] Application Support for JSPS Overseas Research Fellowships (Deadline: End of March 2025)

The Kyoto University Europe Center provides support for young researchers searching for opportunities to gain research experience at European universities and research institutions. One such support is the application assistance for JSPS Overseas Research Fellowships, for which the application guidelines for FY2026 have now been announced.

The Overseas Research Fellowship is a highly competitive and popular program with an acceptance rate of about 25%. It is important to prepare carefully in order to fully comply with the screening policy (3), which states that “the research plan must be concrete and the applicant must have conducted sufficient preliminary negotiations with the host researcher abroad.” Kyoto University European Center encourages young, highly motivated researchers to take up this challenge.

Please be advised that this assistance is intended solely for application support and does not grant travel allowances or provide financial support.

Please consult with our office (Kyoto University European Center) beforehand, as there are universities/institutions in Europe we cannot provide the support with.

Support by Kyoto University European Center*

(1) Issuance of a letter of recommendation addressed to the applicant’s host institution under the name of the Director of the Kyoto University European Office

(2) Advice and support for the preparation of research proposals

(3) Advice on negotiations with host researcher as needed

* Kyoto University European Center staff consist of its director, university researcher administrators and local staff.

Eligibility

• Affiliation with Kyoto University as a researcher or doctoral student.
• Enrollment in a Kyoto University doctoral program as of April 1, 2026, with expected graduation between April 2, 2026, and April 1, 2027 (this latter date applies to applications based on Pre-Approved Qualification).
• If applicable, less than five years of cumulative full-time, fixed-term research experience at a university research institute as of April 1, 2026.
• Japanese nationality at the time of application, or permanent residency status in Japan for foreign nationals.
